Carbohydrate Myth
If I stop eating carbohydrates, will it help me to lose weight?
The key to eating well, being full and being fully nourished is to eat foods that are low in calories, high in nutrient density and high in fibre, because they give you the feeling of fullness. These are complex carbohydrate foods![i] An unfortunate outcome of the recent popularity of diet books is that people are more confused than ever about the health value of carbohydrates.[ii] In Dr Atkins’ own words, he said that he conceded that the worst feature about this diet is the rapidity with which you gain weight if you abandon it.[iii] A recent review of 107 research studies on low-carbohydrate weight-loss diets, concluded that weight loss was associated with long diet duration and reduction of calories, but not with reduced carbohydrate intake.[iv]
Actually, we need to eat about a 90% carbohydrate rich diet consisting of vegetables and sprouted; nuts, grains, seeds & beans and minimal fruit.[v]
We need these complex carbohydrates for their incredible fibre, vitamin & mineral value together with glucose which is used as energy to aid the function of our cells in our bodies, including the brain. When taken in raw form, they act as prebiotics which help feed the fermented foods (which are also carbohydrates) we eat, which help our guts to thrive.
These complex carbohydrates, sprouted and taken in their raw form are full of enzymes which are substances that make life possible. They are needed for every chemical reaction that takes place in the human body. No mineral, vitamin, or hormone can do any work without enzymes. Our bodies, all of our organs, tissues, and cells, are run by metabolic enzymes. They are the manual workers that build our body from proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, just as construction workers build our homes. You may have all the raw materials with which to build, but without the workers (enzymes) you cannot even begin.[vi]
So, if you are interested in losing weight, the bottom line is that when you consume complex carbohydrates, you can consume so much more food and you will never be hungry. This makes losing weight and maintaining optimal weight easy! [vii]
